The Dynamic Defense Academy Land Navigation course is designed to teach and reinforce basic navigation skills to anyone from any background. This course is guaranteed to provide the information necessary to build the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate with a map and compass. 
 
Students will learn about different types of maps and how to read them. Students will also learn and practice how to plot and read points on a map, how to measure linear and non-linear distance, how to establish pace counts, Compass use, Dead Reckoning, and Terrain Association. Students will get the opportunity to test their knowledge with instructor led practical application through a land navigation field training.
 
This training course uses methods and techniques from military, search & rescue, and outdoor survival professionals to ensure high caliber skills are developed and understood. This course is taught by instructors with real world knowledge and experience who are passionate about teaching to a high standard making land navigation skills as simple as possible for anyone from any background.

 

 

C O U R S E    O V E R V I E W


 

This course is designed and structured to equip students with the skills essential for navigating through various terrains using traditional tools like map and compass along with the use of natural indicators. 

 

By the end of this course students will comfortably be able to:

1. Understand topographical maps including symbols, contour line, terrain features, and scales.

2. Understand how to use a compass for navigation including orienting maps and holding bearings.

3. Plan and plot routes using a map and compass.

4. Identify and direction and position based on terrain ascociation. 

5. Navigate succefully in various terrains/enviroments.

7. Execute emergency and hasty navigation techniques.

 

This course will thoroughly cover all the topics neccessary to enable safe and successful navigation off the grid without the aid of any navigation technology like GPS or cellular devices.

F I E L D    T R A I N I N G


All learning objectives are reinforced with instructor led field exercises that will test leraning retention as well as ensure real-world application. The field training is challenging, engaging, and immersive promoting a high standard of learning 
 
Field Training Objectives:
- Locate & Plot Grid Locations
- Demonstrate proper route planning and useing an azmiuth
- Use pace counts and terrain association to effectivley navigate with dead reckoning 
- Build confidence and proficiency in navigation and the use of maps, map tools, and a compass 
- Solidify the learning objectives and add value through real-world experience.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS & INFORMATION
 
 DAY 1: This day will take place in classroom 9am to 6pm with a 1 hour lunch (Students can go get lunch or bring lunch). Map Tools will be required (See Below). 
 Day 2: This day will take place in an offsite location from 9am to 6pm with a 1 hour lunch (Students will need to bring lunch). Map Tools and Field Tools Required (See Below)
